Workshop: Inclusive Documentation: The Definition and Practices

Workshop: Inclusive Documentation: The Definition and Practices

Workshop description

The Inclusive Documentation Working Group will host its first open workshop. The WG started meeting in 2024 in response to growing international interest in inclusive perspectives of museum documentation. The WG will be officially established at the Annual General Assembly.
Inclusive Documentation is based on the idea that documentation is inherently inclusive, realizing multiple perspectives and narratives through participatory and collaborative processes and the inclusion of diverse sources. The WG is developing a definition based on diverse practices and aligned with the new museum definition and establishing guidelines as the next step.

The workshop has four main aims:

  • to introduce the concept of Inclusive Documentation to the ICOM DOCUMENTATION community
  • to share and collect practices of Inclusive Documentation
  • to discuss the Inclusive Documentation definition with input from participants
  • to discuss application/ implementation in various contexts.

The first half of the workshop will be an introduction and exchange of views on Inclusive Documentation and its practices. We will introduce the concept of Inclusive Documentation and its tentative definition. Subsequently, each presenter will share practices from Estonia, Costa Rica, Japan, and Indonesia that form the basis of the tentative definition. During discussions after each presentation and in the general discussion, we hope to exchange and gather a wide range of opinions and information on other practices and ideas not yet reflected in the tentative definition.

The second half will be a discussion focusing on the Inclusive Documentation definition and its implementation. We will especially invite those interested in becoming a member of the WG to exchange opinions and help develop the Inclusive Documentation definition. The discussion will also focus on how to implement Inclusive Documentation successfully in different cases with varying situations and conditions. Finally, we will discuss the WG's roles and concrete action points.
