Workshop: An Introduction to the CIDOC CRM
Workshop description
This workshop will introduce participants to the CIDOC Conceptual Reference Model (CRM), a semantic data standard developed and maintained under the aegis of the ICOM Documentation Committee. CIDOC CRM is a semantic data model (also known as a formal ontology) that enables the representation and integration of complex cultural heritage datasets across data silos, allowing information resources to be used beyond the boundaries of traditional databases. The workshop is intended for museum and cultural heritage professionals, as well as information specialists working in the field, who are interested in integrating their data with those of other departments and institutions and in exploring the potential of semantic web technologies to support research, knowledge dissemination, and semantic interoperability. No prior knowledge of the CIDOC CRM, semantic technologies, or any particular technical skills is required. The workshop will be particularly beneficial for participants who are involved in the creation, management, or curation of cultural heritage data and who wish to make greater use of their data through semantic technologies. Participants will gain an understanding of formal ontologies and semantic data, the practical benefits of semantic data management, and the role of the CIDOC CRM as a high-level standard for integrating museum and cultural heritage information. They will also become familiar with the basic structure of the CIDOC CRM and learn how it can be applied in practice. The workshop will include hands-on activities, so participants are encouraged to bring a laptop.
